How to Restring an Awning

A fabric or canvas awning is a big decor plus for the entrance, terrace or the first floor windows along one side of the house. To get a fundamental shade awning, the fabric cover is only attached to the building over the window or door, and also the sloping or taut material is laced to a horizontal rod suspended parallel to the wall from 2 angled side grips. Replacing or installing the awning entails flux heavy string or thin polyester rope through grommets across the front edge of the awning and about the parallel pole.

Gauge the front of the awning from edge to edge and multiply the length by 3. Cut a piece of thin rope or poly cord to this measurement.

Pull the awning fabric over the parallel rod so that it hangs down over the front of the rod. Secure the fabric to the rod with large spring clips to hold it in position while you work.

Stand beneath the awning, facing the parallel rod and the overlapping front end of the fabric. You’ll be lacing the awning to the rod using a stitched-on panel hardened by grommets, visible on the bottom of the awning. Some awnings might not have a front overhang and will just end in a reinforced hem with a line of grommets across it.

Starting at one side, tie the lacing cord to the first grommet with a secure knot. Then drop the long end of the cord behind the rod; bring it around the rod, up before and through the front of the same grommet to create a loop.

Pull the raw end of the cord between the rod and the cord on the bottom of the rod, and tighten it to lock the cord in place along with also the corner of the awning to the rod.

Push the raw end of the cord during the following grommet, front to rear, bring it down, up and under across the rod, continue lacing the string through the grommets across the rod to the opposite end of the awning. Keep the cord tight enough to close the awning fabric to the rod, but avoid bunching the fabric involving grommets.

Reverse the locking process you used at the start of the restringing. At the previous grommet, feed the raw end of the string through the hole, then front to rear. Pull the end of the cord from behind the rod, under, up and over the rod, through the grommet again and supporting the rod.

Eliminate the spring clips, and fix the cord pressure so the awning lays flat across the parallel rod before you fill out the restringing.

Poke the end of the string between the rod and the cord wrapped around the rod. Pull it up and tie it off at the grommet in a secure knot. Trim any excess cord.
